Mitchell Kuang

Duluth High School

Mitchell Kuang is a senior at Duluth High School who balances academic excellence—particularly in mathematics and science—with a passion for music and the arts. An accomplished pianist with 11 years of experience, an orchestral principal cellist, and an award-winning composer, Mitchell has performed across Georgia and beyond. He has consistently achieved top honors in state and national competitions, including: winning the Georgia Music Teachers Association (GMTA) Piano Competition in 2026 and 2023 (with a second-place finish in 2025 and third place in 2022); winning the Romantic and Impressionist Piano Competition (RIPC) in 2025, 2023, 2021, and 2019 (along with the 2025 Betty Nolting Award); placing third in the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Piano Competition in 2024; earning “3rd Alternate” status at the Emory University Young Artist Piano Competition in 2025; being selected as a cellist for the All-State Orchestra in 2023 and 2025; winning the MTNA Composition Competition for three consecutive years (2022, 2023, 2024) and representing Georgia at the Southeast regional level; and becoming a finalist in the piano category for the 2025 Georgia Governor’s Honors Program (GHP).

Beyond the arts, Mitchell demonstrates exceptional leadership through community service, having contributed over 400 hours of volunteer work since his freshman year of high school; notably, as the president of the non-profit organization “First Step”; he has led and organized numerous community service initiatives. Leveraging his musical expertise, Mitchell led fellow student volunteers from the northern Atlanta area to stage performances for seniors at local senior homes. What began as sporadic visits by a small group evolved into a regular monthly schedule featuring dozens of spectacular performances by over a hundred volunteers from numerous elementary, middle, and high schools—an expansion driven by his dedicated commitment and outstanding leadership and organizational skill. Simultaneously, as a leader of the National Honor Society at Duluth High School, Mitchell has continued to serve the community in various ways: assisting patients at a family clinic, preparing lunches for students from low-income families, supporting mothers and infants in struggling households, and providing academic tutoring and volunteer services for children with special needs. Whether performing, composing, or giving back to society, he is consistently fueled by curiosity, creativity, and a desire to connect with others.
